On my recent visit to Borders Bookstore in West Lafayette, IN I came across a few books that seemed interesting and had some informative content about writing business plans. After carrying out some research, I deduced the following about the books I looked at.
Business Plan Kit for Dummies by Peter Jaret ISBN: 0764597949
Based on my experience of books in the Dummy series, I expected it to carry more information than I needed and not enough checklists and visuals as desired. Surprisingly, it was quite the contrary. The book was loaded with graphics and checklists making it easy to insure that everything as included. However what I did not like about the book was the fact that it did not let the reader do the thinking but rather made the reader think in a specific pattern which had its pros and cons. Personally, wanted a book that just served one purpose – writing a business plan and letting my team do the thinking.
The Idiots Guide to Business Plan by Sue Johnson and Been Moran ISBN: 1592574009
By far my least favorite. It took everything that I did not like in the dummies series and maximized it. It also got rid of the checklists and graphics that I felt would make it easier to read and a whole lot more pleasing to look at considering the element of dullness in the topic.
Business Plan in a day: Get It Done Right, Get it Done Fast! By Rhonda Abraham ISBN: 0974080128
Without a question, the perfect book. It has just about the perfect amount of information by providing multiple examples rather than different forms of thinking. A checklist is included for every section to insure that everything is covered in each section. They cover everything that is need. Example: the Executive summary would have examples of different ways presenting the information and which style has worked the best. Very pictorial and easy to grasp while reading quickly. The book is perfect. It also recommends the cutoff sizes for each section, something that could be very important in the future. I am very impressed by this book and will be recommending this book to the team.
