The three rules

The business plans that I analyzed contained a plethora of examples of the rules suggested in the "1o Rules of Effective Communication" reading.

Ethics

As a photographer, this article struck a lot of chords with me and how “reality” is represented through imagery. This directly applies to business writing and presenting imagery and graphics that are ethical.  The strategy that the article gave for ethical decision making on an individual level was to pretend you’re sitting at home in your living room and have to write something that people/customers could hold you directly responsible for. Would you still write it?

Resume extravaganza

I would hire:

  • Dorothy Flycaster
  • Peter Rabbit
  • Ariel Mermaid
  • Dell Hymes
  • Nikki Sticks

I based my criteria off of the objective, overall layout and concise word choice.

Glad I don't have to work for Douglas Richardson

Mr. Richardson has a lot of helpful valid tips for writing a resume. Although I'm sure he'd have a lot of input on how to improve my resume, he would probably tear it to shreds. That said, the one quote at the end that really stuck with me is this:

"If you recognize that it's my perception and not your intention that controls the fate of your resume, we'll get along fine."

Pitch It

The two people I voted for had passion, excitement and knowledge in common. They both convinced me that they had researched the business venture and that it wasn’t a spur of the moment idea. They spoke clear and concise while convincing me that their idea was viable. They reeled me in with exciting words and simple explanations of the product or service. The successful presentations answered the big questions like: What is it? Who would use it? How will this make money?
