Harvard Pocket Mentor: Creating A Business Plan

As a group, we chose to review the book Pocket Mentor: Creating A Business Plan.  This book was written by Linda A. Cyr, a partner at Tapestry Networks, and published by the Harvard Business School Press, which contributed to the factors in our decision.  Looking through this book we felt that it was valuable because it was divided up into sections that covered each part of a business plan.  This made the read easier than a traditional text because this book contained bullet points, tips and examples.  For our group this made comprehending the text easier because we could reference particular sections easier.  The different sections in the book are getting started, anatomy of a business plan, cover page and table of contents, executive summary, business description, business environment analysis, industry background, competitive analysis, market analysis, marketing plan, operations plan, management summary and attachments and milestones.  Each of these sections had sub sections that went into further detail about that subject.  For example, under the business environment analysis section there is a sub section that discusses 'asking the right questions'.  I found this valuable because it contained four questions that one must consider when analyzing the business environment.  The questions were short and direct and had example responses to each question.  We also found that there were boxes in certain sections that were real life examples of businesses regarding that section.  In the industry background section there is a box that touches on the growth potential of the Private Communications Corporations such as chat rooms and dating services.  Boxes such as this one gave us an insight on how each section is applied in the business world.  We also thought the financial tables in the financial report section were good references for our own reports.  In the back of the book there is an entire section of an example pro forma financial package that will be very helpful when we put together our pro forma.  As we began the decision process on what book to dissect, we thought that this book would work well with The Sunrise Sizzle because it was something that we could skim through quickly when we needed to and pick up vital information.  This book is concise and to the point, containing no fluff making clear what was important to pick up.  Another small detail that stuck out is its size.  Its detailed yet simplistic text, seemed to go right along with its 'pocket book' size.  The material in this book will help us to prepare and write a successful business plan for The Sunrise Sizzle.
