Ship building 101

This in class activity is really about organizational skills and teamwork.  The organizational skills aspect of the exercise correlates well with writing.  In any type of writing, you must first organize your information into a basic model (rough draft).  After that, you must begin to fine tune your basic model by adding more detail and flair.  This basic idea really goes along perfectly with our in class activity.  The idea of the

When you first look at a model pirate ship, you might never think that there is a relationship between building the model and writing a group paper. In English 421, anything is possible. Believe it or not, there are many similarities between the two. First, and probably the most obvious, is that we are working in groups for the project and we are all working together to get this model built. One might say that this is a team building skill to help us when we break up into our smaller groups. Another comparison is with the main base parts of the ship.

Building a pirate ship in class was something that I never expected to do, esspecially in an english class. Eitherway my method for completing this project was quite simple. I took the box for the pirate ship, between the Manufacture name and title of the work 'Carribean Pirate Ship' I simply punched that into Google which brought up the website for Reveel. From there I located the model and got the part number. Part number in hand I went to the specs tab and scrolled down until I located the part number for the Pirate ship, upon finding it I downloaded the instructions in a PDF form.

While I was evaluating potential strategies in my head, my initial response was to hang back and see what other people thought.  With such a large group of peers, no clear command structure existed, and I was hesitant to give my input for fear of appearing to "take control."  I think this observation applies to the white paper project, especially since we will be writing in groups.  While a rigid command structure is not crucial to group writing--and in the case of writing with peers may actually be detrimental--, a form of defined leadership helps

So at first I thought this was kind of a strange thing to do in an english class, but I usually do not think about things too deeply right at the beginning.  This changed after we were told to think about how putting the pirate ship together with the a large group of people was analogous to a technical writing and our white paper project.
